Rick Blain über sich

Back in 2012 I released my 1st album under the name “Rickomat”. In retrospect only I had become aware of it’s true nature. Those ten songs sung in German dealt with intimate topics such as friendship, a difficult father-son relationship, attitude to life, romances, divorce, encounters, the youth, abuse and death. However, the album had a therapeutic meaning for me. Still, it didn’t feel right to perform with it. After a while I realized one thing: I want my music to be happy, jaunty and to spread positive vibes. Feel good music with a message.

In the following years I was part of various smaller bands. Playing the baritone sax, I toured through Germany with the Bavarian pop band Keller Steff Big Band and played on big festivals throughout the year. Still, I wasn’t satisfied as I couldn’t really express myself with this kind of music. I left with the aim to find my very own style as an artist, singer and songwriter.

During my trip to Morocco in 2018 I got inspired by its positivity and minimalistic lifestyle. I was fascinated by the county’s vivid nature and culture where tradition and modernity meet. This experience led me to writing the first three songs of my Indie-Folk debut album Moroccan Tapes: “Happy Day”, “Surferboy” and “Space Cookies” (Release in March, 2019).

Back home I worked hard in the studio and soon came up with another three tracks. “Pauli”, “Desert” and “People” followed. “Pauli” is my declaration of love to my stunning daughter. “Desert” reflects on my trip to the Western Sahara Desert while in “People” I express my personality and way of thinking. 2020 was a challenging year for all of us. Inspired by the “Fridays for Future” movement I wrote the song “no plan@ b” to raise awareness for global warming and climate change which was released in November 2020.

As I was still dreaming of Morocco’s surfer lifestyle, I wrote “surfdays” to capture the vibe of the local surf-scene in Taghazout. What’s better than a sunset surf with good friends in the swells while soaking up the sun? It will forever remind me of my trip to the Costa della Luz in Spain where I attended a surfcamp in early 2020.

Last but not least, “Be my Girl” is a tribute to the youth. It cherishes the precious moments of warm summer nights and reminds the people to celebrate life and never stop dreaming.
